Membrane Coherency and Variation
The spatial logic behind the system was based on a simple rule, which we called here “coherency”. Controlling the input cutting pattern and application points for tension made it possible to determine the output geometry, which allowed for being in control of the overall form. In other words, through applying simple rules of connectivity, cutting and joining (parameter) to a piece of fabric, the geometry and the arrangement of components get generated. While maintaining a cohesive overall structure, by transforming tensioned membranes into stiffened fibre-composite components, different variations of components were generated by parameters, which introduced behavioral changes of the array. This result showed the geometrical capacity and structural possibility that evolve without deterministic control, providing a wide range of choices. The resulting foldable/bendable structure performs as both fields and columns. A variety of axes for folding along edges of the cells allows for numerous possibilities in creating differentiated orientations and forms. Because of these variations, the components, amongst other performative possibilities, bring light in different directions and intensities. A static position is realized through the balance of compression forces running through the cells and tension forces in cables which connect particular cells to each other.
